BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University softball team continues Southern Conference action with a three-game road series against UNCG that is set to start on Saturday, March 28, with a doubleheader at noon and 2 p.m. The game of the series will take play on Sunday at noon (CDT).
The Bulldogs (20-13, 2-1 SoCon) took its first SoCon series of the 2015 season 2-1 over Furman University at home just last weekend and look to improve on those results against a fast improving UNCG (13-12, 0-3 SoCon) squad.
Samford enters this weekend's contest after dropping two to Austin Peay in a midweek affair in Clarksville, Tennessee. The Lady Govs upset the Bulldogs 8-6 in the first contest of the doubleheader on a game-winning grand slam then used the momentum of a grand slam in the second inning of game two to win 8-7.
The Spartans come into the weekend series after winning an 11-9 offensive slugfest against former SoCon member Elon on Wednesday.
Junior outfielder
Megan Dowdy continues to excel at the plate for the Bulldogs this season as she is batting a SoCon leading .459 with 56 hits which is just 11 shy of her school record she set just last season. The Fairhope, Alabama native has a total of 19 multiple hit games on the year and is currently riding an eight game hit streak that includes eight doubles, two triples and a combined 24 runs scored.
Dowdy has inspired other Bulldogs at the plate with her success at the leadoff position which has led to the emergence of some breakout performances. Sophomore
Abby Sweeney has been on a tear this year as she is batting .382 with a team leading eight home runs, which is also good for a tie at the top spot in the SoCon.
The Bulldogs enter the series with an overall 8-14 record against the Spartans with SU winning three out of the four contests during the 2014 season. Samford took the series 2-1 last year at Samford Field and shutout UNCG 3-0 in the first round of the SoCon championships in Greensboro.
