Samford StatsJOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -- The Samford University men's tennis team's three-match winning streak came to an end Sunday as the Bulldogs dropped a 5-2 Southern Conference road decision against the ETSU Buccaneers in an early-league showdown held at the Buddy Hartsell Courts.
"Today was a tough match," said Samford head coach
Rahim Esmail. "ETSU is a good team and they played well today. We had some opportunities in some matches that we lost, but couldn't capitalize and they were able to play well in those moments."
With Sunday's setback,
Samford (7-7, 1-1 SoCon) suffered its first defeat since March 4, when the Bulldogs fell short in a 4-3 loss to Stetson. Since then, Samford rattled off consecutive victories against Jackson State, UNCG and No. 47-ranked UNC-Wilmington.
ETSU (8-7, 3-0 SoCon), which is undefeated in league play this season, jumped out to an early 1-0 lead Sunday by winning the doubles point. The Buccaneers tallied victories on courts No. 2 and No. 3 to clinch the competition.
In singles play, Samford earned a pair of straight-set wins from
Trey Carter and
Eduardo Lourido Sanchez on courts No. 3 and No. 5, but ETSU answered with victories on the remaining four courts to take the 5-2 decision.
Carter's dominant 6-3, 6-3 victory on court No. 3 helped him improve to 7-6 in singles play this season, while Lourido Sanchez moved to 6-6 when playing in the No. 5 singles position.
The Samford University men's tennis team will next be in action Friday at noon (CDT) as the Bulldogs continue their critical four-match SoCon road trip against the Wofford Terriers in a key league contest to be held at the John E. Reeves Tennis Center in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
