Softball Set For Contest Against Jacksonville State
3.4.15 | Softball
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford University softball team continues play with a midweek matchup against in-state Jacksonville State University on Wednesday, March 4, at 5 p.m. at the Samford Softball Field.
The Bulldogs (14-5) return home for a solo contest against the Gamecocks (9-6) after a five-game road stretch in Auburn, Ala. at the Wilson/DeMarini Classic. Samford went 2-3 on the weekend with a pair of wins over Texas State University and the University of Connecticut before the team dropped decisions to SIU-Edwardsville, Ohio State University and No. 16 Auburn.
SU and JSU will meet for the 55th time between the two programs; Samford trails Jacksonville State in the all-time series 18-36.
The Gamecocks took the last contest between the two teams and in 2014 JSU won a 3-2 thriller over SU on a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning from Hayden Crawford.
Samford heads into tonight's matchup as one of the top offensive teams in the Southern Conference as the team leads the league in: Batting avg. (.338), runs scored (107), hits (178), RBIs (98), doubles (33) and total bases (262).
Three Bulldogs have led the charge to put Samford at the top of the league's offensive stats: junior Megan Dowdy (.435), sophomore Abby Sweeney (.417) and junior Caitlin Bice (.400) are all hitting the ball well heading into the early parts of March.
Redshirt junior Mollie Hanson and the rest of the SU pitching staff had their work cut out for them last weekend against some great offensive teams and have it cut out for them again against a tough JSU team.
