SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The Samford University men's tennis team suffered a 5-2 road defeat against the Wofford Terriers on Friday as the Bulldogs came up short in a Southern Conference contest held at the Reeves Tennis Center.

"Today was a tough match and it could have gone either way, as the scores indicate," said Samford head coach Rahim Esmail. "I give credit to Wofford. They fought hard and found a way to win."

With Friday's setback, Samford (7-8, 1-2 SoCon) fell to 1-5 in road matches this season. The Bulldogs are in the midst of an arduous, five-match road stretch and currently own a 1-2 record on the trip. Next up, Samford will play at Furman on Saturday 1 p.m. (CDT) in Greenville, South Carolina.

Wofford (10-11, 3-1 SoCon) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead against the Bulldogs by winning the all-important doubles point.

Samford's combination of Fares Kilani and Justin Ghavami rolled to an 8-2 triumph on court No. 3, but the Terriers notched wins on courts No. 1 and No. 2 to secure the initial point of the match.

On court No. 2, which proved to be the decisive contest of the doubles competition, Wofford's Andrew Graham and Haris Poric held on for a slight 8-7 win over the Bulldogs' tandem comprised of Henry Moore and Austin Akers.

In singles play, Samford's Trey Carter notched a thrilling 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 victory on court No. 3, while teammate Eduardo Lourido Sanchez garnered a similar 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 triumph against the Terriers' David Sklar in the No. 5 singles contest.

Friday's match proved to be one of the closest duels of Samford's 2015 season. Five of the six singles contests were decided in three-set battles.

The Bulldogs proved to be victorious on courts No. 3 and No. 5, but Wofford came out on top in the remaining four matches to secure its 5-2 team win.

The Samford University men's tennis team will next be in action Saturday at 1 p.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs continue their four-match SoCon road stretch in Greenville, South Carolina, against the Furman Paladins in a huge league contest slated to be held at the Minor Herndon Mickel Tennis Center.
