'Dogs Ready To Host Ole Miss In Midweek Contest

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford University softball team puts its seven-game win streak on the line Wednesday, April 8, at 6 p.m. against the University of Mississippi at the Samford Softball Field.

The Bulldogs (27-13, 8-1 SoCon) enter the contest against the Rebels (22-16, 5-10 SEC) with an all-time 3-9 record against the team from Oxford, Mississippi.

The last time Samford emerged victorious from a contest against Ole Miss occurred back in 2001 at the Rebel/Easton Tournament hosted by Ole Miss. The Bulldogs defeated the Rebels 4-1 with a pair of two-run innings, one in the fourth and one in the seventh.

Since then the Rebels have taken last six contests by the combined score of 24-6 over the Bulldogs with the last game resulting in a 3-0 shutout of Samford in Oxford.

Junior Megan Dowdy is on the verge of breaking her own single-season record for hits entering Wednesday's game. The Fairhope, Alabama native enters with 65 hits, which is tied for first among all NCAA DI competitors, and is just two shy of the record she set at the end of 2014 with 67.

Dowdy also ranks 42nd in the country in batting average with a .445 average at the plate in 146 at-bats.

Samford will also need to rely on the hot bat of junior Callie Brister. Brister has been on a tear the past two weeks as she has bumped up her average from .258 to .317 and is hitting .362 over the last 17 games with 21 RBIs, 15 runs, eight home runs and a pair of doubles.

A solid pitching effort will need to present throughout the entire contest from the Bulldogs staff as the Rebels are certainly no slouch at the plate either. Miranda Strother and Elantra Cox lead the Rebels at the plate as both tout a .404 average and a combined 90 hits between the two.

Strother and Cox once on base are still a threat as each has double-digit stolen bases on the year; Strother has swiped 10 while Cox has tallied 23 on 29 attempts.
