BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Samford University head basketball coach
Scott Padgett continued to add size, athleticism and skill to his first full recruiting class Saturday as the Bulldogs officially announced the addition of Division I transfers Iman Johnson (6-5/215/F) and Alex Thompson (6-9/210/F), as well as highly-touted Florida prep standout Wyatt Walker (6-8/230/F).
Johnson comes to Samford from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore as a fifth-year graduate senior. He will be immediately eligible to compete for the Bulldogs in 2015-16. Alex Thompson joined Samford's squad from Auburn University and will be eligible to play as a junior in 2016-17.
Walker, from Jacksonville, Florida, starred at Providence High School and will be a true freshman with the Bulldogs in the fall.
"I'm very excited about each of these three guys and about our entire class as a whole," said Padgett. "We really did a great job of addressing needs. Last year, we were a very small team, but now I feel we've added a lot of size, athleticism and skill. I think we added five great guys who really fit our style, our program and our University."
Iman Johnson transferred to Samford from the University of Maryland
Eastern Shore and will immediately be able to play as a senior in 2015-16. Iman Johnson played in 31 of 33 games at UMES as a junior last season and averaged 3.7 points and 3.2 rebounds per contest for the Eagles. At forward, he logged 17.7 minutes per outing and started in 14 games, while notching a season-high 12 points against Bucknell on Nov. 25.
A highly-acclaimed prep athlete in both basketball and football at Dominican High School in Milwaukee, Wis., Johnson started his collegiate career at Tiffin University where he was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference Freshman of the Year.
By averaging 7.1 points and 6.3 rebounds per contest at Tiffin, he also garnered freshman All-America honors and registered a jaw-dropping 43 blocks in the 2011-12 season.
Johnson spent his sophomore campaign at Eastern Oklahoma State College before transferring to UMES in 2013.
"Iman is a tough, athletic and strong forward," Padgett said. "He can play either forward spot and is a great defender and rebounder. I'm excited to have him here, because he will fit in perfect with our pressing up-tempo style. Iman is a grown man that will outwork his opponent every night."
Alex Thompson, who played his prep ball at Houston Academy in Dothan, was named the 2013 Player of the Year by both the Alabama Sports Writers Association and the Dothan Eagle. He proved to one of three finalists for Mr. Alabama as a senior and scored over 2,000 points in his high school career.
Alex Thompson scored a career-high 16 points in Auburn's opening-round
Southeastern Conference Tournament victory over Mississippi State. After playing in 20 games as a true freshman under then-Head Coach Tony Barbee late in his freshman season, he played in 23 games for current Head Coach Bruce Pearl last season, averaging 2.7 points and 1.9 rebounds.
Thompson highlighted his sophomore campaign by scoring a career-high 16 points in Auburn's opening-round Southeastern Conference Tournament victory over Mississippi State.
"Alex is a highly-skilled forward who can really shoot the 3-point shot and will be able to play either forward position," Padgett said. "Alex will really help add to our size and skill level. He's an underrated athlete and will cause a lot of mismatch problem in the SoCon."
Wyatt Walker put the finishing touches on Samford's recruiting announcement Saturday as the Bulldogs' big-time incoming freshman announced his surprise decision during his high school graduation ceremony.
Immediately after receiving his diploma on stage, Walker unveiled his SamNotStan tee-shirt to the delight of the crowd and to the excitement of Padgett. Walker, a 6-foot-8, 230-pound center, garnered interest from dozens of Division I schools throughout his prep career and chose to attend Samford over high-profile scholarship offers from South Carolina and Bradley.
Wyatt Walker helped lead Providence School to the 2015 FHSAA State championship
and was named the Jacksonville.com Player of the Year last season as a senior. During his time at the nationally-renown Providence School, Walker played under the tutelage of legendary coach Jim Martin. As a senior, he helped lead PS to the 2015 Florida High School Athletic Association State championship and was named the Jacksonville.com Player of the Year.
Providence School has been an elite college prep basketball program throughout the years and has produced a number of NCAA stars in Duke's Grayson Allen, Florida alum Patrick Young, Temple's Will Cummings and many more Division I players.
In his four years at PS, Walker won the 2013 FHSAA State championship and competed in four-consecutive Final Fours. He finished his career with an amazing 138-10 record.
Walker was a four-year starter, four-time district champion, four-time regional champion and didn't lose a single home game.
Additionally, Walker earned 2015 Prep Hoops Florida Class 3A Player of The Year honors, was named to the 2015 All-First Coast First Team, the 2015 Arby's Classic All-Tournament Team, the 2014 Beach Ball Classic All-Tournament Team and played AAU for five years with NikeTeamFlorida.
He finished his illustrious prep career at Providence School with 1,408 points, 1,015 rebounds, 316 assists, 113 blocks and 85 steals.
"Wyatt is a highly-skilled big man who can play multiple positions," said Padgett. "He can play either inside or outside and he's a winner. He only lost 10 total games in four years of high school, never lost a home game and won two state championships."
Walker joins fellow freshmen Dakota Quinn and Matt Rose, who were both signed earlier in the recruiting class.
Dakota Quinn averaged 18 points and 14 rebounds in just six games at
Davidson Academy as a junior, while shooting a sizzling 63 percent from the field. Dakota Quinn kicked off the early signing period for the Bulldogs and the 6-foot-9, 215-pound forward/center is expected to play either the No. 4 or No. 5 position at the college level.
Quinn comes from an outstanding family, which includes his father, Jonathan, mother, Casi, brothers, Colton and A.J., as well as his sister, Ellie. His father played quarterback in the NFL for Jacksonville, Kansas City and Chicago, and was selected out of Middle Tennessee in the third round of the 1998 draft.
As a junior at Davidson Academy, Quinn quickly averaged 18 points and 14 rebounds in just six games for the Bears, while shooting a sizzling 63 percent from the field. Quinn, who is also a quarterback on the football team, transferred to Davidson Academy in late-January upon the hiring of his father as the school's football coach.
New to Tennessee, Quinn quickly turned heads in the recruiting circles with his athleticism, size and demonstrative two-handed dunks. He immediately began to receive attention from college recruiters.
"He is new to the area and I think that maybe a lot of teams missed out on him," said Padgett. "I feel like we have a good one in Dakota and his family is great. Obviously, he has an outstanding pedigree with his dad being a former NFL quarterback and hard work is definitely not foreign to him. He understands hard work coming in and that's key, because that's exactly what we do here."
Matt Rose averaged 22.1 points and 8.6 rebounds per game as a senior
at Lexington Christian Academy, and was a finalist for Kentucky Mr. Basketball. Matt Rose signed with Samford on April 15 and averaged 22.1 points and 8.6 rebounds per game as a senior at Lexington Christian Academy, and was a finalist for Kentucky Mr. Basketball.
A 6-foot-7, 200-pound swingman, Rose closed out his prep career as one of top players in LCA history. A three-time team captain, he led the Eagles in scoring twice and in rebounding three times. Rose also finished his illustrious career as the second leading scorer (1,506 points) and rebounder (654) in school history.
Rose turned in a brilliant 85.6-percent free-throw percentage as a senior and finished his high school tenure with a 78.7-percent mark, which is ranked second in school history. He chose Samford over heavy interest from a multitude of Division I offers, including Columbia, UNC Asheville and Lipscomb.
A prolific scorer at LCA, Rose averaged 12.3 points and 6.4 rebounds as a sophomore and increased his totals to 17.7 and 7.2 as a junior. He ended his career with a 50.8-percent shooting percentage and knocked down 39.1-percent of his 3-pointers in 2014.
Rose was honored as a finalist for Mr. Basketball in the talent-rich state of Kentucky. He was also ranked in the top 10 in the state in free-throw percentage and top 20 in scoring. Additionally, Rose was chosen to compete in the annual Kentucky-Indiana All-Star game and was named First-Team All-City by the Lexington Herald-Leader.
In his senior season alone, Rose tallied 21, 20-point performances and recorded 10 double-doubles in 29 games. He earned Most Valuable Player honors at the Central Bank Basketball Classic, the Woodford County Invitational, the Clem Haskins Classic and at Lexington Christian High School.
Rose comes from an outstanding family, which includes his father, Jamie, and his mother, Kris. He also has a pair of twin sisters, Scarlett and Lauren, as well as brothers, James, Clay and Neil, who are triplets.
"Matt is very excited about being here and he really fits everything that Samford is all about," said Padgett. "His shooting ability allows him to do a lot of other things on the court. He's also a very versatile player and should play both the No. 3 and No. 4 positions on the floor for us. He's an intelligent guy, he knows how to play and will bring a lot of things to the table for us."
