Bulldogs Push For Late Comeback Falls Short

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Samford University volleyball team concluded the weekend with a 3-1 (25-19, 25-19, 15-25, 28-26) defeat at the hands of Wofford on Saturday, Oct. 15, inside Benjamin Johnson Arena.

The Bulldogs (12-10, 3-4 SoCon) outpaced the Terriers (12-10, 5-3 SoCon) 69 points to 60 in the match but tallied 27 attack errors and 14 service errors in the four-set effort. Senior Erin Bognar posted another solid offensive outing with 18 kills (.351) to go along with a service ace and nine digs.

Gabbi Greenwald led the Samford attackers with a .562 hitting percentage that translated into 10 kills.

Series Update
The Bulldogs conceded only their second loss all-time to the Terriers this afternoon. The last loss occurred just last season on the road in the very same gymnasium on Oct. 2, 2015. Samford still maintains a healthy career 10-2 overall record against Wofford.

By The Set
Set 1 | L, Wofford (25-19) Samford jumped out early on the Terriers and led by as many as five points with a 6-1 lead. The Bulldogs led for a majority of the set but relinquished the lead to Wofford midway through the set at 15-14 off of a block by Colleen Reilly and Kelly Bossert. T.J. Russell tied up the set 18-18 to put the Bulldogs back in position to make a run but Wofford rallied to rip off six-straight points to put the set out of reach.

Set 2 | L, Wofford (25-19) The following set was a back and forth affair between the two squads as neither seized the momentum. Colleen Reilly led the Terriers on a 3-0 run to put Samford behind 17-13. From there Wofford would outscore the Bulldogs 8-6 for the rest of the set to take a 2-0 lead into the intermission.

Set 3 | W, Samford (25-15) It was all Bulldogs after the intermission but the set remained close until opened up a 14-9 lead over the Terriers. From there Samford closed out the set on an 11-6 run. It was the most efficient set by the Bulldogs in the match where the team notched a .440 attack average and limited themselves to only a trio of errors. Wofford hit -.040 and recorded more errors (9) than kills (8) in the set.

Set 4 | L, Wofford (28-26) Samford looked to push the match to a fifth and final set as the team held the lead for the majority of the set. The Terriers gained the late for good 22-21 during a 4-0 run but the Bulldogs rallied to regain the lead for a pair set point opportunities at 25-24 and 26-25 but three-straight points by Wofford closed out the match to avoid thwart the Samford comeback.

Key Notes
- Senior Mattie Newson paced the team defensively with 15 digs in the match which is a season-high and just one shy of her career-high of 16 he accumulated last season against Western Carolina.

- It is the ninth time this season that senior Erin Bognar has posted 18 or more kills in a match and seventh time this season she has hit above .300 for an average.

- The .563 hitting percentage posted by Greenwald in the match is the highest percentage she has posted from the floor this season and the second over .500 average.
