LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- The Samford University basketball team shot 33 percent from the field and 21 percent from 3-point range Wednesday as the Bulldogs came up short in a 58-48 road loss against the New Mexico State Aggies in an early-season, non-conference contest held at the Pan American Center.

With the loss,
Samford (1-1) moved to 1-1 in the 2016 San Diego Classic. On Monday, the Bulldogs opened their season with an 83-65 road victory at San Diego.

Samford will close out the four-game San Diego Classic with back-to-back home games against Bethune-Cookman (Nov. 26) and Nicholls State (Nov. 27).

New Mexico State (2-1) improved to 2-0 at home this season. The Aggies' lone loss of the 2016 campaign occurred on the road Sunday at Colorado State, 64-61. New Mexico State has proven to be nearly unbeatable at home in the Pan Am Center. The Aggies boast a remarkable 75-9 record at home in the last five seasons.

Samford's leading scorer Wednesday proved to be true freshman
Triston Chambers. The Bulldogs' 6-foot-2 sharpshooter from Cold Springs, Alabama, scored 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the field and drained a trio of 3-point baskets. Chambers also pulled down three rebounds and handed out a pair of assists.

Sophomore center
Wyatt Walker registered his second straight double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds. In two games this season, Samford's relentless 6-foot-9 native of Jacksonville, Florida, is averaging 13.5 points and 14.5 rebounds per outing.

Demetrius Denzel-Dyson,
Justin Hopkins and
Terry Brutus all finished with seven points apiece.

New Mexico State was led in scoring Wednesday by Eli Chuha with 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field. He also grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds in 23 minutes per game. Chuha helped lead the Aggies on a late 10-0 run in the second half to extend New Mexico State's lead from 44-42 to 54-42 with 1:37 left in the game.

The Samford University basketball team will next be in action Monday at 6 p.m. (CST) as the Bulldogs travel to Buies Creek, North Carolina, for a third straight game away from home against the Campbell Camels. The contest will be held at CU's Gore Arena/Pope Convocation Center (3,095).
