BOX SCORE

SEASON STATS

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —
The East Tennessee State baseball team pounded out 14 runs on 17 hits on its way to a 14-8 win over Samford in game one of a Southern Conference series Friday night at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

"We got our tails handed to us tonight," Samford head coach Casey Dunn said. "They swung the bats extremely well early, and then had the big ninth. There were some encouraging things. But, I thought our fears came true. That is a good offensive club over there, and they looked like it tonight."

Parker Curry (5-2) pitched 3.0 innings, giving up seven runs on 10 hits to take the loss on the mound for Samford. Jared Brasher, Caleb Maggio, Tanner Cunningham, Connor Radcliff and Connor Burns also saw time on the mound for the Bulldogs.

Jamin McCann (5-3) earned the win on the mound for ETSU. He tossed 2.2 innings in relief, giving up no runs on just one hit. Ryan Simpler earned his second save of the season, pitching 2.0 innings, giving up three runs on two hits.

Offensively for Samford, Troy Dixon had a grand slam and a double, going 2-for-4 with four RBI. Hunter Swilling went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a triple and two RBI.

ETSU was led by Lance Mays, going 2-for-4 with a home run, a triple and five RBI. Blake Rowlett went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Hagen Owenby also homered for the Bucs, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.

After ETSU jumped out to a 4-0 lead on the top of the second inning, Samford did most of its offensive damage in the bottom of the frame, plating five runs to take a 5-4 lead. Austin Edens led the inning off with a single and later scored on a wild pitch for Samford's first run of the game. Dixon later hit a grand slam, his first collegiate home run, to give the Bulldogs a one-run lead.

The Bucs came back to take the lead for good with three runs in the top of the third inning. May tripled to right field to drive in Rowlett and Robby McCabe for a 6-5 lead. Christian Bailey later singled to drive in Mays to give the Bucs a 7-5 advantage.

The score remained the same until ETSU plated a run in the top of the seventh inning to push its lead to 8-5. Rowlett singled through the right side of the infield to drive in Trey York for a three-run ETSU advantage.

ETSU put the game away with six runs in the top of the ninth inning. Owenby led the inning off with a home run for the first run of the inning. Kevin Phillips, Rowlett, McCabe and York also drove in a run each in the inning. Bailey scored on an error for the inning's final run to make the score 14-5.

Samford plated three runs in bottom of the ninth inning to make the final score 14-8. Swilling tripled to right field to drive in Jordan Fucci and Jared Watson for the first two runs of the inning. The game's final run was scored when Heath Quinn doubled to left field to drive in Swilling.

With the loss, Samford drops to 26-20 overall and 8-8 in Southern Conference play. ETSU improves to 20-25 overall and 7-9 in league games.

The same two teams will continue the series with a game Saturday afternoon. The contest is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
