BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — In a back-and-forth contest, the Samford baseball team dropped a 12-9 decision in the second game of a three-game Southern Conference series with ETSU Saturday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
The teams combined for six home runs, four by ETSU and two by Samford. The game was tight throughout. Samford took a 9-8 lead in the bottom of the fourth, but was outscored, 4-0 over the last five innings for the 12-9 loss.
"We couldn't keep the ball in the ballpark and we didn't score for the last five innings," Samford head coach
Casey Dunn said. "We did some good things for four innings, offensively, and then they brought in some guys out of the pen that we couldn't score against. It was just one of those days that we didn't play good baseball."
T.J. Dixon had three hits, going 3-for-6 to lead Samford at the plate.
Hunter Swilling and
Ben Carrick hit a two-run homer each for the Bulldogs.
Tristan Widra (3-4) pitched 2.2 innings in relief, giving up two runs on one hit to take the loss on the mound for Samford. Widra was one of five pitchers used by Samford in the loss.
For ETSU, Robby McCabe hit two home runs, while Aaron Maher and Blake Rowlett added a homer each in the game. Maher went 2-for-5 with three RBI, Rowlett went 2-for-5 with three RBI and McCabe went 2-for-5 with four RBI.
Josh Jacques (1-1) earned the win on the mound for the Bucs, tossing 1.2 innings, allowing no runs on one hit. Ryan Simpler picked up his third save of the season, and second of the weekend, pitching the final 1.1 innings, giving up just one hit.
ETSU started the game strong, plating four runs in the top of the first inning, with two of the runs coming on Rowlett's home run to left field. Samford answered with two runs in the bottom of the first when Swilling hit a two-run homer to left field.
The Bulldogs tied the score with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. After
Danny Rodriguez walked, Carrick homered to left field to knot the score at 4-4. After ETSU took a 5-4 lead in the top of the third inning, Samford plated three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 7-5 advantage.
ETSU took the lead again with three runs in the top of the fourth, all coming on a home run by Maher and giving the Bucs an 8-7 lead. Samford came back again with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 9-8 lead.
The score remained the same until the top of the seventh inning when McCabe hit a three-run home run to give the Bucs an 11-9 lead. In the top of the ninth, McCabe hit a solo home run to make the final score 12-9.
Samford left 11 men on base in the loss, compared to just five for ETSU. The Bulldogs left the bases loaded in the eighth inning, and the team left two runners on in the third, fourth and ninth innings.
With the loss, Samford falls to 26-21 overall and 8-9 in Southern Conference play. ETSU improves to 21-25 overall and 8-9 in league play.
Samford and ETSU will wrap up their series with a game Sunday afternoon. The contest is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
