BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Samford football team will open the 2016 season by hosting Mars Hill tonight at 6 p.m. at Seibert Stadium.

Samford is coming off a season in which the Bulldogs posted a record of 6-5 overall and 3-4 in Southern Conference play. Samford returns eight starters on offense and seven starters on defense from last year's squad.
Mars Hill posted a record of 6-5 overall and 5-2 in the South Atlantic Conference in 2015. The Lions return eight starters on offense and seven starters on defense as well.
Samford and Mars Hill are meeting for the fourth time, with Samford winning each of the three previous meetings. The teams first met on November 3, 1973, with Samford earning a 45-27 win at Seibert Stadium. The second meeting in the series came on October 29, 1988, and Samford came away with a 30-13 victory, also at Seibert Stadium. The most recent meeting came on Oct. 31, 1998, a 20-2 Samford in at home.
