Volleyball Earns Key 3-1 Road Win At The Citadel Saturday

Samford’s Phillip, Boesing and Hobbs all register double-digit kill performances in the victory

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Samford University volleyball team closed out its two-match Southern Conference road trip in impressive fashion Saturday as the Bulldogs rallied for a 3-1 triumph against The Citadel Bulldogs in a key conference showdown held at McAlister Field House. Samford dropped the first set, 25-18, but then bounced back for three straight victories of 25-22, 25-17 and 25-19.
 
With its win, Samford (10-14, 5-5 SoCon) improved to 4-6 in true road matches this season. So far this year, the Bulldogs' road victories have come against Indiana, 3-2, Western Carolina, 3-1, UNCG, 3-2, and The Citadel (8-19, 2-8 SoCon).
 
Samford finished with three players earning double-digit kills against The Citadel. Shayla Phillip turned in a brilliant performance with 13 kills and jaw-dropping .455 hitting percentage, while Krista Boesing added 13 kills of her own and Kelsi Hobbs chipped in with 10.
 
Hobbs, Samford's sophomore native of Hoover, Alabama, registered a double-double in Saturday's victory. To go along with her 10 kills, she also added 13 digs.
 
Fellow sophomore Grace Tiesman paced Samford with 14 digs in the contest, while junior Taylor Anderton moved back to her primary role as the Bulldogs' setter en route to a match-high 32 assists. Anderton also posted 13 digs in helping to lead Samford to its critical road victory Saturday.
 
The Samford University volleyball team will next be in action Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs return home to face the UNCG Spartans in a key SoCon matchup to be held at the Pete Hanna Center.
