BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University volleyball team completed its regular-season, home-and-home sweep of the Western Carolina Catamounts on Saturday as the Bulldogs posted a 3-1 Southern Conference triumph in a key league matchup held at the Pete Hanna Center.
 
Samford (11-15, 6-6 SoCon) won the first two sets of the match by identical scores of 25-23, before coming up short in the third stanza, 25-14. The Bulldogs then rallied back in the fourth-and-decisive frame of the evening to post another 25-23 victory to claim the 3-1 overall win.
 
Earlier this year, on Sept. 29, in Cullowhee, North Carolina, Samford posted a similar 3-1 triumph over Western Carolina (10-16, 4-8 SoCon). Saturday's contest featured 37 ties and nine lead changes.
 
The Bulldogs' Krista Boesing led all competitors in the match with 21 kills. She was followed closely by sophomore Kelsi Hobbs with 17 and Shayla Phillip who finished with 10 kills and didn't commit a single attacking error en route to posting a brilliant .588 hitting percentage.
 
Samford's Hobbs registered a double-double by also added 13 digs. Kendal Strand led the team with 20. Sophomore defensive specialist Grace Tiesman finished with 19 and junior setter Taylor Anderton notched 10. Anderton also shined in her setter role as she accumulated a match-high 57 assists in the victory.
 
Western Carolina's MaKenzie White paced her squad with 19 kills. Katie O'Connor added 16, while Meagan Sanchez earned 29 digs to lead both teams. The Catamounts' Jo-Leigh VerVelde posted an impressive double-double with 48 assists and 20 digs in a losing effort.
 
The Samford University volleyball team will next be in action Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs continue their current four-match SoCon homestand against the ETSU Buccaneers.
