GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Samford University volleyball team battled hard in every set of Friday's road test against the first-place Furman Paladins, but came up short in a 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 26-24) Southern Conference finale held at Alley Gym. The Bulldogs will begin play in the 2017 SoCon Tournament next Friday at Western Carolina University.

With Friday's loss,
Samford (13-17, 8-8 SoCon) closed out the regular season with a 5-7 record in road matches and finished the week with a 1-1 record. On Wednesday, the Bulldogs posted a thrilling 3-2 come-from-behind victory at Mercer.

Samford's meeting with Furman on Friday consisted of 21 ties and six lead changes. The Bulldogs'
Krista Boesing led all competitors with 13 kills, while sophomore Kelsi Hobbs posted a double-double with 11 kills and 15 digs. Samford's Kendal Strand also chipped in with 10 digs.

Furman (19-9, 13-2 SoCon) closed out the match with five players earning double-digit digs. Hunter Thompson, Jamila Johnson and Meg DeMarr all finished with 13, while Nicole Mack and Christen Sikora both posted 11. Thompson also added a match-high 33 assists in the Paladins' victory.

Offensively, Furman was paced by Mack with 11 kills and Sikora with 10.

Taylor Anderton finished with 32 assists, four digs, three blocks and a kill.

The Samford University volleyball team will next be in action Friday at the 2017 SoCon Tournament, which will be held at Western Carolina, Nov. 17-19, at the Ramsey Center in Cullowhee, North Carolina. The Bulldogs' quarterfinal-round opponent and start time has yet to be determined and will be released this weekend.
