GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Samford University basketball team was defeated on the road in a Southern Conference matchup against the first-place Furman Paladins on Saturday, as the Bulldogs wound up on the short end of the stick in a 90-73 decision held at Timmons Arena.

With the loss, Samford (15-11, 6-7 SoCon) moved to 8-6 in road games this season and suffered their fourth straight defeat against Furman (18-8, 11-2 SoCon). The Paladins lead the all-time series between the teams, 15-7.

Furman, which sits atop the SoCon standings with five games remaining in the regular season, extended its conference-leading winning streak to eight. The Paladins have not been defeated in nearly a month, dating back to Jan. 14.

Samford true freshman Josh Sharkey came off the bench to score a career-high 23 points Saturday. Sharkey, the Bulldogs' high-energy point guard from Philadelphia, finished 9-of-11 from the field and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds. At 5-foot-10, Sharkey's rebound total also proved to be a career-high.

The Bulldogs' Demetrius Denzel-Dyson scored 18 points in a game-high 38 minutes of playing time, while junior point guard Christen Cunningham added 11.

Fellow junior Alex Thompson chipped in with eight points off the bench. He was joined by Eric Adams and Justin Hopkins, who added six and four points, respectively. The Bulldogs' reserves combined to score 41 of the team's 73 points, while Samford's starters tallied 32.

The Bulldogs turned in a solid 49-percent shooting outing from the field Saturday, but Furman connected on a sizzling 57 percent of its shot attempts, including a 13-of-24 tally (54 percent) from beyond the arc.

The Bulldogs committed 21 turnovers Saturday as the Paladins finished with a 38-5 advantage in points off turnovers.

The Samford University basketball team will next be in action Wednesday at 6 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs conclude their three-game SoCon road stretch against the ETSU Buccaneers in a pivotal league contest to be held at Freedom Hall in Johnson City, Tennessee.
