GAME NOTES
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford softball team will play its first home games of the 2017 season when the Bulldogs co-host the Samford/UAB Classic this weekend.
The Friday and Sunday games will be played at the Samford Softball Field, while the Saturday contests will take place at UAB's Mary Bowers Field. Samford will take on Iowa State and Murray State on Friday, Murray State and Indiana on Saturday, and UAB on Sunday.
Samford opened the 2017 season with back-to-back five-game weekend tournaments. The Bulldogs enter this weekend's action with a record of 2-8. Of Samford's eight losses so far, five have come in one-run games, and three of the contests went to extra innings.
Last weekend, Samford competed in the Trojan Classic in Troy, Ala. In that tournament, Samford lost to Jacksonville twice (7-0 and 9-8 in 8 innings), split two games with Longwood (W, 8-5 and L, 3-2 in 8 innings), and fell to Troy (6-2).
So far this season,
Shelby Maze leads Samford with a .436 batting average.
Madison Couch is hitting .387, while
Abbie Miranda has a .361 average with five doubles, a home run and a team-high 12 RBI.
In the circle for Samford,
Grey Adams has a 3.40 ERA in 35.0 innings, a 1-3 record and a team-high 25 strikeouts.
Taylor DeCelles has tossed 17.1 innings, and has a 4.04 ERA and a 1-2 record.
Murray State is currently 8-2 after a 13-5 win over McNeese State last weekend. Indiana has a record of 2-7 after a 13-7 loss to Texas. Iowa State enters the weekend with a record of 7-3 after a 2-0 win over Tennessee State. UAB has a mark of 1-7 after an 8-3 setback to Villanova Sunday afternoon.
Admission is free for all games played at the Samford Softball Field.
