BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford men's tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision to South Alabama Friday afternoon at the Samford Tennis Center.
"We competed well at some spots today," Samford head coach
Rahim Esmail said. "Jake (Faundez) and Eduardo (Lourido Sanchez) were in positions today where they could win, before the match was clinched. And Justin (Ghavami) and Hugo (Moreira) had chances during their respective matches but just let their opportunities slip a little."
Samford won on the No. 1 doubles court, with
Jake Faundez and
Eduardo Lourido Sanchez defeating Juan Cruz Soria and Loic Cloes, 6-4. The Bulldogs, however, dropped the doubles matches at No. 2 and No. 3, giving South Alabama the doubles point.
"South Alabama is a good enough team where if you don't capitalize on your opportunities against them, they will create opportunities for themselves," Esmail said. "The doubles point was competitive and we had our chances. We are looking forward to competing again tomorrow."
In singles, South Alabama earned wins at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5 to seal the victory. Samford held leads on the No. 2 and No. 3 singles courts before the match was clinched by the Jaguars.
With the loss, Samford falls to 2-7 on the season. South Alabama improves to 11-2 with the win.
Samford will host Belmont Saturday. The match is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start from the Samford Tennis Center.
