BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford men's tennis team earned a 4-2 victory over Belmont Saturday afternoon at the Samford Tennis Center.
 
"We gutted out a win today," Samford head coach Rahim Esmail said. "We started slow in the doubles, but by the end of the match, we finished strong. It was a gutsy performance by the guys today, and we showed a lot of fight. It's something we pride ourselves in within our program and it was the difference maker today in us winning or losing. I'm proud of the way our upper classmen stepped up today."
 
Belmont earned the doubles point, winning on courts No. 1 and No. 3. Samford, however, bounced back to take wins on singles courts No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4, while Belmont took the singles match on the No. 5 court. The match on the No. 6 singles court was not finished.
 
On the No. 1 singles court, Justin Ghavami defeated Cedric Dujacquier, 6-3, 5-7, 6-1. At No. 2 singles, Jake Faundez earned a 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 win over Vincent Sterkens. Eduardo Lourido Sanchez took the match at No. 3 singles, defeating Hendrick Inno, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
 
At No. 4 singles, Max Rebol defeated Zak Khan, 6-2, 6-4. Stephen Goldman of Belmont defeated Curran Verma from Samford, 2-6, 7-6, 6-1 at No. 5 singles.
 
With the win, Samford improves to 3-7 on the season. Belmont falls to 5-6 with the loss.
 
Samford will return to action on March 1, when the Bulldogs host cross-town rival UAB. The match is set for a 1 p.m. start from the Samford Tennis Center.
