SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- In its longest game of Samford's 115-year basketball history, the Bulldogs scored their second highest total of all-time Thursday, but suffered a heart-wrenching 131-127 quadruple-overtime defeat on the road against the Wofford Terriers in a thrilling, edge-of-your-seat contest held at Benjamin Johnson Arena.

The matchup proved to be Samford's first four-overtime game in school history. The Bulldogs' previous longest outing occurred March 4, 2008, in a 101-94 (3OT) loss at UT Martin in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament.

Samford has scored over 100 points twice this season, but Thursday's 127-point outburst proved to be the Bulldogs' highest output since Feb. 22, 1971, when they defeated Mississippi College, 131-95, in their final game of the 1970-71 season. That total still stands as Samford's single-game scoring record.

The Bulldogs' Christen Cunningham logged a school-record 53 minutes of playing time and finished the marathon matchup with 21 points, 12 assists and only two turnovers. Samford's junior point guard from Georgetown, Kentucky, added five rebounds and shot a near-perfect 10-of-11 from the free-throw line.

Demetrius Denzel-Dyson paced Samford in scoring with 31 points on 13-of-19 shooting from the field. He drained 5-of-6 attempts from 3-point range and upped his shooting percentage from beyond the arc to 50 percent (60-for-120) on the season.

Denzel-Dyson's deep, fade-away 3-pointer at the end of the third overtime tied the game at 118-118 and sent the contest to a school-record fourth overtime.

In the fourth period of extra time, Wofford's Eric Garcia scored eight of the Terriers' 13 points, including a pair of NBA-range 3-pointers to help secure the win. Garcia played a career-high 58 minutes and finished the game with 31 points, 10 assists and five rebounds.

Wofford's Fletcher Magee tallied a career-high 36 points and went 13-of-13 from the free-throw line, including a pair in the final seconds to ice the game.

At the end of the second overtime period, Samford's Terry Brutus knocked down a pair of clutch free throws to give the Bulldogs a 104-103 lead with 0.8 seconds left to play.

On the ensuing possession, the Terriers were attempting to inbounds the ball when Samford was called for a foul. Garcia headed to the line with a pair of free-throw attempts and a chance to win the game. He missed the first one, but connected on the second shot to force a third overtime tied at 104-104.

In two games this season, Samford and Wofford have combined to score a total of 438 points in nine periods of back-and-forth action. The Bulldogs earned a 91-89 overtime victory at home against the Terriers on Jan. 8.

Samford shot 52.4 percent from the field, 51.9 from beyond the arc and 84.4 percent from the charity stripe. Wofford outscored the Bulldogs, 21-9, in points-off turnovers, while Samford dominated fast-break point, 18-0.

Wyatt Walker proved to be the best player in the game during regulation. The Bulldogs' 6-foot-9 sophomore center scored 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the floor before fouling out late in the second half.

Samford's Justin Hopkins and Eric Adams both turned in the best games of their Bulldog careers Thursday. Adams came off the bench to score career-highs in both points (13) and rebounds (7). Hopkins achieved the same in a career-high 41 minutes of action with 19 points and eight boards.

The Samford University basketball team will next be in action Saturday at 3 p.m. (CST) as the Bulldogs continue their weekend road trip against the Furman Paladins in a late-season SoCon showdown to be held at Timmons Arena.
