OXFORD, Ala. – The Samford softball team will compete in the Leon Smith Classic, hosted by Southeast Missouri, this weekend at Choccolocco Park.
 
In the tournament, Samford will take on Jacksonville State and Missouri State on Saturday, and Eastern Illinois and Tennessee State on Sunday.
 
Samford has opened the 2017 season with four-straight five-game weekend tournaments. The Bulldogs enter this weekend's action with a record of 6-14.
 
Last weekend, Samford participated in the Bulldog Slamboree, hosted by Mississippi State. In that tournament, Samford defeated Central Arkansas (3-2 in 8 inn.) and Massachusetts (9-5), and suffered two losses to Mississippi State (6-1 and 6-5 in 12 inn.), and one to Massachusetts (13-0).
 
So far this season, Shelby Maze leads Samford with an impressive .459 batting average. Madison Couch is hitting .328, while Abby Sweeney has a .286 average. Abbie Miranda has a .276 average with a team-high five doubles and 13 RBI. Hannah Trombley leads the team in RBI with 15 so far this season.
 
In the circle for Samford, Grey Adams has a 3.24 ERA in 58.1 innings, a 3-4 record and a team-high 38 strikeouts. Taylor DeCelles has tossed 46.2 innings, and has a 3.90 ERA. Jessica Stone has a 2-2 record and a 3.85 ERA in 20.0 innings of work.
 
Jacksonville State enters the weekend with a record of 11-6. The Gamecocks are coming off a 3-2 win over Bradley on Sunday. Missouri State has a record of 7-7 after an 8-0 win over UMKC on Sunday. Eastern Illinois comes into the tournament with a mark of 10-8 after a 4-0 loss at Lipscomb on Sunday. Tennessee State has a record of 4-13 after a 6-3 loss at Memphis on Sunday.
