BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford softball team will play host to Western Kentucky Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the Samford Softball Field.
The game will mark Samford's first non-tournament game of the 2017 season, as the Bulldogs have opened the season with five-straight weekend tournaments. Samford enters Tuesday's game with a mark of 7-17 so far this season.
Last weekend, Samford traveled to Oxford, Ala., to compete in the Leon Smith Classic, hosted by Southeast Missouri. In the Leon Smith Classic, Samford earned a 1-0 win over Eastern Illinois, while the Bulldogs dropped contests to Jacksonville State (8-0 in 5 inn.), Missouri State (2-1) and Tennessee State (10-9 in 9 inn.).
So far this season,
Shelby Maze leads Samford with a .435 batting average.
Madison Couch is hitting .329, while
Abby Sweeney is batting .284 with two doubles, two home runs and 12 RBI.
Abbie Miranda leads the team in RBI with 16 so far this season.
In the circle for Samford,
Grey Adams has a 2.87 ERA in 75.2 innings, a 4-6 record and a team-high 54 strikeouts.
Taylor DeCelles has tossed 50.2 innings, and has a 4.14 ERA and a 1-6 record.
Jessica Stone has a 2-2 record and a 4.14 ERA.
Western Kentucky comes into Tuesday's game with a record of 16-9 overall and 3-0 in Conference USA games. The Hilltoppers opened C-USA play last weekend, earning a sweep over Middle Tennessee. Western Kentucky won the games by scores of 3-0, 6-4 and 2-0.
Samford and Western Kentucky will be meeting for the 15
th time, with WKU holding an 8-6 advantage in the series. The two teams met in a doubleheader last season in Bowling Green, Ky., with Samford sweeping the twin bill by scores of 8-1 and 14-9.
