SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford leads the Southern Conference's Germann Cup standings at the conclusion of the winter seasons, the league announced Tuesday.
The Germann Cup is awarded annually to the Southern Conference school fielding the league's best all-around women's sports program. Scoring is conducted on a percentage basis, with only the top seven sports for each school counting toward its season total.
Each sport is worth 10 points, with each spot in the standings given equal measure relative to how many schools sponsor that particular sport. For sports that determine a regular-season champion, a two-point bonus is awarded for winning the league tournament. Each school's total for the year is divided by 70, the maximum number of points possible when counting seven sports, to find its percentage.
Samford has 42.86 points for a .612 percentage. So far this season, Samford has captured titles in women's soccer, volleyball and indoor track and field. The women's cross country team came in second at the SoCon Championship meet.
The Commissioner's Cup goes to the top male athletics program in the league. Samford is currently in sixth place in the standings, with 28.42 points for a .406 percentage. ETSU leads the Commissioner's Cup standings with 39.83 points and a .569 percentage.
