CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The Samford softball team will play a non-conference doubleheader at Austin Peay Wednesday, with the first game beginning at 2 p.m. at Cheryl Holt Field.
Samford enters the doubleheader with a record of 10-19 on the season. The Bulldogs won three-of-four games last weekend at the Skyhawk Hampton Inn Classic. Samford earned two wins over Western Illinois, and the Bulldogs split two games with the host team, UT Martin.
Samford has been led at the plate so far by outfielder Shelby Maze, batting .451, which ranks second in the Southern Conference. Maze leads the league in hits with 46 so far this season.
Behind Maze, infielder Madison Couch is batting .340, while outfielder Abby Sweeney is hitting .338 with four doubles, five home runs and 22 RBI. Sweeney's 22 RBI lead the team and are tied for second in the SoCon. Sweeney was named the SoCon's Player of the Week on Monday after a strong performance in last weekend's tournament.
In the circle, Jessica Stone has a 4-2 record and a 3.47 ERA. Stone was named the SoCon's Pitcher of the Week on Monday as well. Grey Adams has a 2.71 ERA, with a 5-7 record.
Austin Peay has a record of 8-14. The Govs were swept in a three-game series at Lipscomb over the weekend.
Samford and Austin Peay will be meeting for the 41st time, with Samford holding a 28-12 advantage in the series. The teams met last season in a doubleheader in Birmingham, with Samford earning two wins by scores of 7-0 and 5-1.
