SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Samford men's tennis team fell by a score of 4-3 in Southern Conference action Saturday afternoon at Wofford.
"Today was a tough battle," Samford head coach
Rahim Esmail said. "We had some tough, adverse conditions to play in, but the team showed a lot of character and maturity, and I am proud of them for that. We did not play our best, and got off to a slow start, but still put ourselves in a position to be successful - it was just a little too late when we made our push. Doubles hurt us as well - we had chances at 1 and 2 and let them slip."
Wofford swept the three doubles matches to earn the first point of the match. The Terriers won at No. 1 doubles, 7-5, at No. 2 doubles, 6-3 and at No. 3 doubles, 6-1.
Samford earned wins in singles at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4. Wofford, however, took wins on the No. 1, No. 5 and No. 6 singles courts to earn the 4-3 victory.
At No. 2 singles,
Jake Faundez defeated Lucas Cerbelli, 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-4). On the No. 3 singles court,
Eduardo Lourido Sanchez defeated Parks Schoen, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Max Rebol picked up a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Jack Thomas at No. 4 singles.
With the loss, Samford falls to 4-9 overall and 0-2 in Southern Conference matches. Wofford improves to 11-7 overall and 1-2 in league matches.
Samford will return to action on April 1, when the Bulldogs play at ETSU.
