SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Samford right-hander
Cody Shelton suffered his first loss of the 2017 season Friday as the Bulldogs came up short in a 7-5 road Southern Conference defeat at the hands of the Wofford Terriers at King Field. Shelton, Samford's talented sophomore, moved to 3-1 on the year and still boasts a team-best 1.98 earned run average.
Â
Samford (21-16, 4-6 SoCon) suffered its fourth straight road loss in conference play Friday. Since winning two straight at VMI on April 1 and 2, the Bulldogs have been defeated three times at Mercer and once here against
Wofford (21-17, 6-4 SoCon).
Â
The Terriers proved to be victorious in Friday's series opener despite committing a season-high six errors. In fact, all four of Samford's runs against Wofford starter
Adam Scott (5-3) were unearned. The Terriers' ace finished with seven strikeouts in seven full innings of action and left the game with a 7-4 advantage.
Â
Wofford jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run homer from McClain Bradley.
Â
Samford was then able to take advantage of two costly Terrier errors in the third frame to even the game at 2-2. The Bulldogs' lone lead of the game occurred in the next inning as
Ayrton Schafer singled to left field and
Taylor Garris was able to score all the way from first base as leftfielder Mack Nathanson misplayed the roller, allowing the ball to reach the fence.
Â
Samford's Garris,
Anthony Mulrine and
Jordan Fucci all registered two-hit performances Friday. Mulrine and Fucci both drove in one run apiece, while Garris crossed the plate twice.
Â
The Bulldogs'
T.J. Dixon,
Branden Fryman,
Austin Edens and
Troy Dixon all added hits in the game, but Samford left eight runners on base in the loss.
T.J. Dixon, who owns a .342 batting average this season, has now reached base in 35 of the team's 37 games.
Â
With a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning, things were looking good for the Bulldogs on Friday, but then Wofford mounted a rally of its own and scored five runs in the next three frames.
Â
The Terriers built a 7-4 advantage behind Scott as Cole Bradley came on late in the contest to earn his first save of the season.
Â
Samford had two runners on base in the top of the ninth inning with the score 7-5, but the Bulldogs' Fucci rapped a sharply-hit grounder that was turned into a game-ending double play.
Â
Due to expected rain in the area Sunday, Samford and Wofford will play a series-ending doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. (CT). The second game is currently slated to start at approximately 4 p.m.
