GREENVILLE, S.C. – The sixth-seeded Samford men's tennis was eliminated from the Southern Conference Tournament with a 4-2 setback to third-seeded Mercer Friday afternoon.
With the loss, Samford ends its season with a record of 7-12. Mercer improves to 21-5 on the season, and the Bears advance to Saturday's semifinal round.
Samford won the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead. At No. 1 doubles,
Jake Faundez and
Justin Ghavami defeated Sam Philp and Olivier Stuart, 7-6 (7-4). On the No. 2 doubles court,
Max Rebol and
Curran Verma defeated Stathis Tsiranidis and Fernando Guardia, 6-3.
In singles, Samford claimed a victory at No. 2, with Faundez defeating Philp, 6-2, 6-3. Mercer, however, earned wins at No. 3, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles to secure the win. The match on the No. 1 singles court was not finished.
