BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford men's tennis team earned its first Southern Conference win of the season, downing UNC Greensboro, 4-3 Sunday afternoon at the Samford Tennis Center.
 
"Today was a great match overall," Samford head coach Rahim Esmail said. "Both teams competed extremely hard. We fought really hard today for what we earned."
 
After UNCG swept the three doubles matches, Samford came back to win singles matches at No. 2, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 to secure the 4-3 victory
 
"We have been doing some good things the last couple matches but they were in spurts," Esmail said. "Today was a big improvement, as we were more consistent with our performance across the board. Eduardo did a great job today when the match was on the line. He kept his composure really well and played some of his best tennis on the big points when it counted. I am looking forward to competing again this week."
 
At No. 2 singles, Jake Faundez defeated Marcus Vidgren, 6-4, 6-2. On the No. 3 singles court, Eduardo Lourido Sanchez downed William Albright, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5.
 
At No. 5 singles, Curran Verma defeated Jack Burkill, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. Hugo Moreira earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Ian Melnik on the No. 6 singles court.
 
With the win, Samford improves to 5-11 overall and 1-4 in SoCon play. UNCG falls to 7-11 overall and 2-4 in league matches.
                                             
Samford will host Chattanooga on April 12. The match is set for a 2 p.m. (CT) start from the Samford Tennis Center.
