CHICAGO -- The Samford University volleyball team competed with the resolve of a champion Saturday as the Bulldogs rallied back from a 2-1 deficit to defeat the Fairfield Stags, 3-2 (25-15, 19-25, 16-25, 25-22, 15-7), in a thrilling nonconference matchup held on the second day of action here in the 2017 Rambler Challenge at Gentile Arena on the campus of Loyola-Chicago.

Samford (2-3) won the first set over Fairfield (3-3) by a count of 25-15, but then dropped the next two frames, 25-19 and 25-16.

Then, with the Stags seemingly holding all of the momentum in the fourth set, the Bulldogs came out strong and posted a 25-22 victory in the stanza. Samford's tally shifted all of the momentum to the Bulldogs and they built on that energy to cruise to a decisive 15-7 triumph in the fifth-and-final set of play.

With its win, Samford moved to 1-1 in the Rambler Challenge and snapped a three-match losing streak. The Bulldogs will conclude play in this weekend's tournament Sunday at noon (CT) against the homestanding Loyola Ramblers.

In Saturday's win, Samford's Krista Boesing paced all players with 21 kills. The Bulldogs' junior outside hitter from New Albany, Indiana, finished the contest with a staggering 73 total attempts. She also added seven digs and three block assists.

Sophomore Kelsi Hobbs turned in a brilliant performance with 17 kills and only four errors for a team-high .406 hitting percentage. She also led the team with 16 digs.

Samford's Shayla Phillip added nine key kills, while junior Taylor Anderton directed the Bulldog attack from her setter position and accumulated 40 assists.

Following this weekend's 2017 Rambler Challenge, the Samford University volleyball team will next be in action Sept. 8, at 9 a.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs begin play in the highly-talented New Mexico State Invite to be held in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
