GREENSBORO, N.C. -- In a back-and-forth contest featuring two of the best teams in the Southern Conference Saturday, the Samford University volleyball team rallied late to defeat the UNCG Spartans, 3-2 (25-23, 23-25, 25-14, 25-27, 16-14), in an epic five-set thriller held in Fleming Gym.
 
With the victory, 
Samford (8-10, 3-1 SoCon) extended its winning streak to three straight matches. Since dropping a 3-0 home loss to The Citadel on Sept. 22, the Bulldogs have reeled off consecutive SoCon triumphs against league-powers Wofford, 3-1, Western Carolina, 3-1, and 
UNCG (9-7, 2-2 SoCon).
 
Samford now boasts a 3-3 record this season in true road outings and will continue its four-match conference road stretch next week with contests at Chattanooga and ETSU.
 
In Saturday's hard-fought victory at UNCG, the Bulldogs took the first set by a score of 25-23, but then the Spartans returned the favor in the second frame, 25-23.
 
Samford cruised to a 25-14 win the third stanza and came one point away from winning the match in the fourth set before UNCG rallied late to take the frame, 27-25.
 
The Bulldogs trailed early in the decisive fifth set against the Spartans, but then rallied back when it counted to even the match at 14-14 and eventually put the contest away with the 16-14 triumph.
 
Samford's 
Krista Boesing led four Bulldogs in double-digit kills with 19, while 
Shayla Phillip and 
Kendal Strand both added 13 apiece. Sophomore 
Kelsi Hobbs also reached the double-digit kill plateau with 12 on 41 total attacks. Phillip turned in a blistering .417 hitting percentage in Saturday's victory.
 
Junior setter 
Taylor Anderton tallied a match-high 52 assists in the contest, while 
Grace Tiesman, Anderton and Strand registered 25, 23 and 18 digs, respectively.
 
The Samford University volleyball team will next be in action Oct. 6-7, as the Bulldogs continue play in their four-match SoCon road swing against both Chattanooga and ETSU. Samford will face Chattanooga this upcoming Friday at 5 p.m. (CT) and ETSU on Saturday at 7 p.m.
