BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford women's tennis team earned a 6-1 win over Kennesaw State in the spring opener for both teams Saturday at the Samford Tennis Center.
 
Samford swept the three doubles matches to earn the first point of the match. At No. 1 doubles, Roos van der Zwaan and Ellie Gerlach defeated Alexandra Mercado and Jessica Cantrell, 6-1. On the No. 2 doubles court, Holly Horsfall and Elsa Pool earned a 6-1 win over Laura Hopton and Cristina-Perez Marti. At No. 3 doubles, Arianna Beltrame and Grace Jennings defeated Aspen Jarrett and Jada Tijani, 7-6.
 
In singles, Samford won the matches at No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 to take the 6-1 victory over the Owls.
 
At No. 1, Gerlach defeated Marti (KSU) 6-0, 6-1. On the No. 2 singles court, van der Zwaan defeated Mercado, 6-4, 6-2. At No. 3 singles, Horsfall earned a 6-4, 6-3 win over Cantrell. The No. 5 singles match saw Jennings defeat Jarrett, 6-2, 7-5. On the No. 6 singles court, Beltrame defeated Tijani, 6-2, 6-0.
 
Samford will return to action on Jan. 26, when the Bulldogs host Belmont. The match is set for a 4 p.m. start from the Samford Tennis Center.
