BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford men's tennis will defeated Alabama State, 6-1 Saturday afternoon at the Samford Tennis Center.
 
"We played a very solid match today," Samford head coach Rahim Esmail said. "I saw a lot of positives from our team. We played really well in some spots, which I was happy with. We played a very convincing doubles point, which really gave us some momentum heading into the singles. We are looking to continue to make improvements this week."
 
Samford swept the three doubles matches to earn the first point of the match. At No. 1 doubles, Jake Faundez and Eduardo Lourido defeated Ion Efrim and Alexis Collard, 6-4. At the No. 2 position, Rossouw Norval and Aleksandar Petrovic earned a 6-2 win over Andrej Trajkovski and Alejo Calvis.  On the No. 3 doubles court, Max Rebol and Justin Ghavami defeated Tomas Fernandez and Carl-Louis Luckmann, 6-2.
 
In singles, Samford earned wins at the No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 positions to earn the 6-1 win.
 
At No. 1 singles, Faundez defeated Efrim, 6-3, 7-6. On the No. 2 singles court, Ghavami defeated Fernandez, 7-5, 1-0 (def.). On the No. 3 singles court, Lourido earned a 6-2, 6-2 win over Collard.
 
At No. 4 singles, Norval defeated Luckmann, 6-0, 6-2. On the No. 5 singles court, Petrovic defeated Calvis, 6-1, 6-1.
 
With the win, Samford improves to 2-1 on the young season. Alabama State falls to 0-3 with the loss.
 
Samford will return to action on Sunday, Feb. 4, when the Bulldogs play at Auburn. The match is set for a 4 p.m. start from Auburn, Ala.
