BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University baseball team played a total of 25 innings in two games Friday as the Bulldogs split a nearly nine-hour doubleheader with the Harvard Crimson in the opening day of an early-season, non-conference series being held at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

Samford (3-3) rallied for a thrilling walk-off victory in the 10
th inning of game one. After Harvard's Matt Rothenberg singled and scored in the top half of the frame, the Bulldogs bounced back with a single from
Jordan Fucci, a double to left field from
Max Pinto and a game-winning double to right field from junior outfielder
Sam Teague to secure the 6-5 victory.

Samford pounded out 13 hits in the game and were paced by multi-hit performances from
Troy Dixon,
Anthony Mulrine,
Austin Edens and Teague.

The Bulldogs' starting pitcher
Cody Shelton tallied a nine-strikeout outing and only allowed two hits in seven full innings on the mound. Samford's junior faced 27 hitters in the contest and only saw four
Harvard (1-1) student-athletes reach base.

The Crimson scored three runs in the top of the eighth and then one more in the ninth to try to top the Bulldogs, but Samford kept retaliating with runs of its own en route to the victory.

Senior
Erin Baldwin (1-0) picked up the win for Samford, while
Grant Stone (0-1) was issued the loss for Harvard.

In Friday's second game of the doubleheader, the teams combined for 45 strikeouts in 15 full innings of action. Samford's pitching staff registered 22 strikeouts, while Harvard added 23.

Harvard struck first with two runs in the top of the sixth inning. The Bulldogs then rebounded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh frame. Each team would also tack on single scores in the eighth inning to knot the score at 3-3.

The game then remained tied at 3-3 for the next seven inning until Harvard opened the top of the 15
th with a pair of runs when first baseman Patrick McColl sent a two-run double off the wall in left field. McColl finished with a 1-for-7 performance at the plate.

The Bulldogs'
Anthony Mulrine,
Austin Edens and
Taylor Garris accounted for six of the team's nine hits in the outing. Edens finished 2-for-7 in the matchup, including a second home run of the season.

Harvard's
Hunter Bigge (1-0) earned the victory in the game, while
Jack Rude (0-1) was issued the loss.

Samford and Harvard will continue play in this weekend's four-game series Saturday at 2 p.m. (CT) with another doubleheader to be held at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
