CHARLOTTE, N.C. – In a battle that went down to the wire, the Samford men's tennis team fell at Charlotte, 4-3 in a non-conference match Sunday evening.
 
"Today was a tough, hard-fought match by both teams," Samford head coach Rahim Esmail said. "It came down to the wire and they were able to tough out some third sets. We look forward to getting back after it tomorrow."
 
Samford won the doubles point, with victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. At No. 1, Jake Faundez and Eduardo Lourido defeated Luca Keist and Benjamin Wayand, 6-3. On the No. 2 doubles court, Rossouw Norval and Justin Ghavami earned a 6-2 win over Oriol Puig Forne and Leonardo Menezes.
 
In singles, Samford earned wins at No. 4 and No. 5, but Charlotte took victories at No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and No. 6 to take the 4-3 victory.
 
At No. 4 singles, Norval defeated Forne, 6-3, 6-4. On the No. 5 singles court, Aleksandar Petrovic defeated Sam Rice, 6-3, 7-6 (7-0).
 
With the loss, Samford falls to 5-6 on the season. Charlotte improves to 8-8 with the win.
 
Samford will return to Southern Conference play by playing at UNCG Monday. The match is set for a 12 p.m. (CT) start from Greensboro, N.C.
