Â
With the win,
Samford (15-14, 4-2 SoCon) extended its winning streak to four straight games and improved to 6-4 on the road this season. The Bulldogs also notched their first three-game SoCon road sweep since accomplishing a similar feat at The Citadel, May 13-15, 2016.
Â
Samford will next be in action Tuesday at 6 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs return home to face Alabama State in a midweek matchup to be held at Joe Lee Griffin Field. Next week, Samford will head to Charleston for a three-game conference contest at The Citadel.
Â
The Bulldogs jumped all over
Furman (13-15, 0-3 SoCon) on Saturday and held a 6-0 advantage after four innings of play. Samford rallied for five runs on five hits in the third frame and then added a single run in the fourth.
Â
Late in the game, the Bulldogs also tacked on a pair of runs in both the sixth and the ninth innings.
Â
Freshman
Brooks Carlson led Samford offensively with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate. He also scored three runs in the contest and improved his batting average on the season to a team-high mark of .320. The Bulldogs'
Branden Fryman drove in a game-high three RBI and finished 2-for-5 at the dish.
Â
Additionally, Samford's Ryan Crocket posted a two-hit performance and blasted his first home run of the season deep over the fence in left center field. The Bulldogs' sophomores
Anthony Mulrine and
Ayrton Schafer both added two-hit outings, while
Taylor Garris and
Connor Burns chipped in with key base hits.
Â
Once again, Samford's pitchers proved to be the stars Saturday. Junior
Stephen Jones (2-4) started the game and hurled seven full innings of two-hit baseball. The Bulldogs' talented right-hander from Tallahassee, Florida, struck out a pair of Furman hitters in the contest and lowered his season ERA to 4.04.
Â
Samford's
Jack Rude followed up Jones' brilliant performance on the mound and cruised through the eighth inning, while senior
Erin Baldwin contributed to
Wyatt Burns' tradition by striking out the side in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Â
The Samford University baseball team will next be in action Tuesday at 6 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs welcome the Alabama State Hornets to Joe Lee Griffin Field for a key in-state showdown.
