BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- With two outs in the top of the ninth inning, the Samford University baseball team surrendered a pair of runs on two hits as the visiting Troy Trojans rallied for a 5-4 come-from-behind nonconference win held at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
Â
Troy's Brandon Lockridge started the rally with a double to left field. Then, with two outs, he was on second base when Joey Denison strolled to the plate.
Â
Denison, who finished the night with a 2-for-5 performance at the dish with two RBI and a run scored, chopped a ground ball to
Samford (6-7) shortstop Brandon Fryman. Fryman bobbled the ball to allow Denison to reach first and then compounded the mistake as he tried to throw out Lockridge at third.
Â
Fryman's throw proved to be errant and Lockridge crossed the plate for the game-tying run. Two hitters later, the Trojans' Drew Frederic singled to right center and Denison was able to score from second base for what proved to be the game-winning run.
Â
Frederic finished 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored.
Â
Samford was unable to score in the bottom of the ninth inning, therefore
Troy (8-5) earned its first victory at Joe Lee Griffin Field since 2013.
Â
The Bulldogs'
Josh Rich (0-1) suffered the loss despite not allowing an earned run, while the Trojans'
Lance Johnson (2-0) tallied the victory and CJ Carter registered his first save of the season.
Â
Troy scored in the top of the first inning to take an early 1-0 advantage, but then Samford scored a single run in each of the next four frames to take a 4-1 lead into the top of the fifth.
Â
The Trojans chipped away at the Bulldogs' advantage with single runs in the fifth and eight innings, but Samford still seemed destined to pick up the victory until Troy's ninth-inning rally.
Â
Offensively, the Bulldogs' Fryman and
Brooks Carlson both turned in multi-hit performances Tuesday, while
Troy Dixon,
Anthony Mulrine,
Ryan Crockett and
Ayrton Schafer all registered key hits as well.
Â
Carlson, Samford's true freshman from Mobile, improved his team-leading batting average to .366 with his 2-for-3 hitting performance.
Â
The Bulldogs'
Hamp Skinner started the game on the mound and seemed poised to earn the victory. He left the game in the fifth inning, while holding a 4-2 advantage in the contest.
Â
Samford's
Jack Rude and
Erin Baldwin also came in and pitched some key innings for the Bulldogs.
Â
The Samford University baseball team will next be in action Wednesday at 6 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs continue play in their five-game homestand against the Austin Peay Governors in a nonconference contest to be held at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
