SPARTANBURG, S.C. – For the third time this season, Samford senior center fielder
Shelby Maze was named the Southern Conference's Player of the Week when the league released its weekly softball awards Monday afternoon.
Maze previously earned the honor on March 5 and April 2. Her three honors are tied for the most of any SoCon player this season.
In three games last week, Maze hit .778 (7-for-9) with three RBI and four runs scored in leading Samford to a series win over Western Carolina. During the series, she became Samford's all-time career leader in hits with 280, eclipsing the previous record of 274, set by current Samford assistant coach
Megan Dowdy (2013-16).
Maze went 2-for-2 with an RBI in game one of the series. In the second game, she was 2-for-3 with an RBI, and she went 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored in the series finale.
For the season, Maze is hitting a team-best .417 with three doubles, a triple, nine RBI and a team-high 29 runs scored. Maze enters this week on an 11-game hit streak, and she has a team-best 16 multi-hit games so far this season.
Maze and the Bulldogs will host Austin Peay in a doubleheader Wednesday at the Samford Softball Field. The first game of the doubleheader is set for 4 p.m. and admission is FREE!
