GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Samford University baseball team was limited to two runs for the first time since March 25 on Saturday as the Bulldogs suffered a 7-2 road loss against the UNCG Spartans in a Southern Conference contest held at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.

With the defeat, Samford (24-16, 10-4 SoCon) dropped back-to-back losses for the first time since consecutive setbacks against Troy, 14-2, and ETSU, 7-4, on March 20 and 23, respectively.

UNCG (28-10, 9-2 SoCon) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead Saturday and held a 3-1 advantage after two innings of action. Samford's opening run of the game occurred in the top of the second inning as Max Pinto sent a two-out single through the right side of the infield and later scored from second base on a Taylor Garris single to right field. Garris finished 2-for-4 at the plate, while Pinto went 1-for-4.

In the top of the fourth inning, the Bulldogs would trim UNCG's lead to 3-2 as Ayrton Schafer tallied a one-out single, stole second base then came around to score on a fielding error from the Spartans' third baseman Caleb Webster. Schafer finished the game 1-for-4 at the dish.

Samford's run in the top of the fourth inning would prove to be its last score of the game.

UNCG rallied for three runs in the sixth stanza and then another tally in the eighth to build its decisive 7-2 advantage. The Spartans have been nearly unbeatable at home this season and own a 19-6 record when playing at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.

Offensively, Samford was paced by Anthony Mulrine, Branden Fryman and Garris with two hits apiece. The Spartans' most valuable player proved to be Webster with a perfect 3-for-3 outing at the plate to go along with a trio of RBI.

The Bulldogs' true freshman starting pitcher Samuel Strickland (6-1) suffered the first loss of his collegiate career Saturday. He allowed four earned runs in five full innings of action and struck out five in the matchup. Samford's Jack Rude and Jake Greer also received time on the mound.

UNCG's Bryce Hensley (4-2) recorded a complete-game victory in the contest. He only allowed one earned run in the full nine innings of action and struck out three Bulldogs.

Samford and UNCG will square off in the third-and-final game of this weekend's SoCon series Sunday at noon (CT) in the key three-game set being held at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
