BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University baseball team was shut out for the first time since March 10 on Friday as the Bulldogs suffered a 1-0, 11-inning loss to the SIUE Cougars in the first game of a three-game set being held this weekend at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

In the defeat, Samford (24-19) was held scoreless for just the third time this season. The previous two shutouts both occurred against Georgia State, 2-0 and 1-0, on March 9 and 10, respectively.

The Bulldogs tallied eight hits Friday, but just couldn't get a rally going. Samford left nine runners on base and had Ayrton Schafer thrown out at the plate in the bottom of the third inning.

SIUE (11-29) scored the game-winning run in the top of the 11th as junior second baseman Aaron Jackson led off the inning with a double down the right field line. He was then advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt from leadoff hitter Jordan Ross and scored on the next at-bat as Eric Giltz send an RBI single up the middle.

The Cougars' Giltz and Jared McCunn led their team with 2-for-5 performances at the plate. The pair combined to register four of SIUE's total of 10 base hits.

Samford's Taylor Garris notched a two-hit outing Friday by finished 2-for-4 at the dish, while the Bulldogs' Branden Fryman, Troy Dixon, Brooks Carlson, Schafer, Max Pinto and Anthony Mulrine all added hits. Samford finished the contest with five runners left on base in scoring position, including the 10th and 11th innings.

SIUE starting pitcher Collin Baumgartner turned in six full innings of action and allowed six hits in the contest. He also tallied three strikeouts. Brock Fulkerson (2-1) came on in relief and hurled the next four innings of play, while striking out four Bulldogs and only allowing a pair of hits. Mason McReaken came on to pitch the bottom of the 11th inning to notch his fifth save of the season.

Samford pitcher Cody Shelton and Wyatt Burns (3-3) combined to only allow one earned run on 10 hits. Shelton started the game for the Bulldogs and struck out seven hitters in 6.2 innings of work. Burns, also a senior, pitched the final 4.1 innings and allowed one run on five hits.

Friday's game proved to be Samford's first extra-inning contest since Feb. 23, when the Bulldogs came up short against Harvard, 5-2, in 15 innings.

Samford and SIUE will conclude their three-game series Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. (CT) here at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
