OXFORD, Ala. -- The Samford University baseball team will be competing in its final nonconference contest of the 2018 regular season Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs square off against the Jacksonville State Gamecocks in an in-state matchup to be held at Choccolocco Park.

Samford (27-22) enters the contest with a full head of steam after going 3-1 last week in games against UAB and Wofford. The Bulldogs secured their season sweep of UAB on Tuesday with a 7-5 home victory, before closing out its seven-game homestand with a series win against Southern Conference-rival Wofford over the weekend.

The Bulldogs defeated the Terriers in the first and last games of the series, 4-2 and 4-3, while dropping the middle matchup, 6-4, in 12 innings. Samford owns a 12-6 record in SoCon play this season and currently holds sole possession of second place in the conference standings.

On Wednesday, the Bulldogs will look to snap a four-game losing streak on the road. Since winning eight straight away contests against UAB, Furman, The Citadel and Alabama, Samford was swept at UNCG in a three-game series, then fell at No. 19 Auburn on April 24, 7-2.

SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION

A pair of Gamecocks now rank 1-2 on the league's career hits chart as former Gamecock Bert Smith is the OVC's all-time leader in career hits with 323 and Daniel slid in to the No. 2 spot on the chart in JSU's 24-12 loss to the Eagles in the rubber game of the series. Daniel, with 308 career hits, now stands 16 hits shy of surpassing Smith's hits total.

The senior infielder collected six doubles in the three-game set to surpass former Gamecock Sam Eberle's mark of 62 doubles in a career. Eberle played at Jacksonville State from 2009-12.

Daniel is near the top spot on the OVC's career double mark as Southeast Missouri's Jeremy Johnson has held the record of 65 career doubles since the 2000 baseball campaign. He posted three doubles on the day and has accumulated 64 career doubles.

Daniel finished 4-for-6 on the day and finished the weekend 8-for-14 and reached base 20 times.
