BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford volleyball team won the first two sets, but eventually fell to Kennesaw State, 3-2 (25-20, 25-13, 19-25, 21-25, 11-15) in the final match of the Courtyard by Marriott Samford Invitational Saturday afternoon at the Pete Hanna Center. Samford falls to 2-1 with the loss, while Kennesaw State improves to 3-0.
KEY MOMENTS
- In set one, Samford jumped out to an early 10-4 lead.
- The Bulldogs extended their lead to 20-12, but Kennesaw State fought back to pull to within three at 23-20.
- A kill by Lauren Deaton, and blocks by Shayla Phillip and Taylor Anderton gave Samford the 25-20 win.
- In the second set, Samford took a 7-3 lead to start the session.
- Samford extended its lead to 19-10.
- After a KSU point, Samford closed the set with a 6-2 run to take the 25-13 win.
- Kennesaw State took the early lead in set three, 7-3.
- Samford fought back to take the lead at 15-14.
- Kennesaw State, however, closed out the set with an 11-4 run to take the 25-19 win.
- In the fourth set, with Samford leading, 10-9, KSU went on a 7-1 run to take a 16-11 lead.
- Samford answered with a 6-1 run to knot the score at 17-17.
- The Bulldogs then took a 20-18 lead, but KSU answered with a 7-1 run to take the 25-21 win.
- With the fifth set tied at 5-5, Kennesaw State went on an 8-3 run to take a 13-8 lead.
- Samford was unable to get back in the set after that, eventually falling, 15-11.
