AUBURN, Ala. – The Samford men's tennis team opened its spring season with a pair of 4-0 losses at Auburn Saturday afternoon.

"Today was our first day competing and we got a lot out of it," Samford head coach Rahim Esmail said. "To be put to the test twice in one day against a quality SEC team is a great opportunity for our guys. We have a very young team, and it is exciting to see how much room we have to grow. There is a lot of work to be done, but that's the fun part about what we get to do. It will be interesting to see where this team is at in April, come tournament time. We had our chances in the first match to win the doubles point. The opportunities were there for us but we couldn't quite capitalize on the chances we had. We competed well in singles our first match and had chances on a lot of courts. We kept in close in a lot of first sets and Rebol and Lyttle both played well at number 6 today. Looking forward to getting back to work this week and preparing for our upcoming home matches in two weeks."
 
In the first match, Samford won the No. 3 doubles match with Max Rebol and Aleksandar Petrovic defeating Tim Dollman and Anders Fry, 6-2. Auburn, however, won the doubles matches at No. 1 and No. 2 to earn the first point of the match. The Tigers then took the singles matched at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 5 to earn the 4-0 win.
 
In the second match, Samford lost the first two doubles matches again, and the No. 3 doubles match was not finished as Auburn took a 1-0 lead. In singles, Auburn claimed wins at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4 to close out the 4-0 win.
 
Samford will host Alabama State for the team's home opener on Jan. 26. The match is set for a 1 p.m. start at the Samford Tennis Center.
