BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford men's tennis team earned a 5-2 win over Alabama State Saturday afternoon at the Samford Tennis Center.
 
With the win, Samford improves to 1-2 on the season. Alabama State falls to 1-3 with the loss.
 
"Today was a good start for our first home match," Samford head coach Rahim Esmail said. "At multiple times during the match, both during the doubles and singles points, we were tested at some point. We did a very good job of closing out the doubles point. Sami and Daniel played their best tennis during the last 10 minutes of that match, playing a flawless tie-breaker to clinch the doubles point."
 
Samford won the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs won at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles courts to pick up the first point of the contest.
 
"We got off to a slow start in the singles, but our guys down low did a great job of getting off to quick starts, as well as picking up their level when it got close," Esmail said. "We need to continue to focus on getting better each day. Tomorrow we will have another opportunity to compete and get better at the aspects that will make our team better."
 
In singles, Samford claimed wins at No. 1, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 to pull out the 5-2 win. Max Rebol clinched the match with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Chris Andre at No. 5 singles.
 
Samford will host North Alabama Sunday. The match is set for a 1 p.m. start from the Samford Tennis Center and admission is FREE!
