SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford junior wide receiver and return specialist Montrell Washington was named the Southern Conference's Special Teams Player of the Week when the league released its weekly football awards Monday morning.
 
Washington produced one of the biggest plays in Saturday's 31-13 win at Western Carolina. With Samford trailing, 10-0 late in the first quarter, Washington returned a punt 59 yards for a touchdown to turn the momentum and start Samford's comeback. He also had one kickoff return for 21 yards, and he caught one pass for eight yards.
 
This marks the sixth time this season a Samford player has been named a SoCon Player of the Week. Quarterback Chris Oladokun was named Offensive Player of the Week three times (Sept. 2, Sept. 16 and Sept. 23), quarterback Liam Welch was named Offensive Player of the Week Sept. 30, and place-kicker Mitchell Fineran was named Special Teams Player of the Week Sept. 30.
 
After last Saturday's win at Western Carolina, Samford has a record of 5-6 overall and 4-4 in Southern Conference play. The Bulldogs will wrap up the 2019 season with a game at Auburn Saturday at 11 a.m. at Jordan-Hare Stadium. The game can be seen live on the SEC Network.
