BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –The Samford men's tennis team defeated the UNC Greensboro Spartans by a score of 5-2 in Southern Conference action Saturday afternoon at the Samford Tennis Center.
With this home victory, Samford improves to 9-7 overall and 1-2 in Southern Conference play. UNCG falls to 6-11 overall and 1-4 in SoCon action.
"We had another tough battle today," Samford head coach
Rahim Esmail said. "We did a pretty good job in the doubles, and that helped us carry momentum into the singles, winning 4 of 6 first sets. I feel we did a very good job today playing the big points well. Rossouw and Jack both did a good job towards the end of the match, staying tough and sticking to their games. Every match down the stretch will be tough here and we need to continue to be ready to compete."
In singles play, the Bulldogs took home four out of six matches.
Rossouw Norval won in three sets on court one,
Daniel Orlita won in two sets on court two,
Aleksandar Petrovic won in straight sets at No. 4, and
Jack Lyttle took the win on the No. 6 court in straight sets.
In doubles, the Bulldogs won two of three matches. Samy Kirberg and Lyttle earned the win at No. 1, and Petrovic and
Max Rebol took the victory on the No. 3 doubles court.
Samford will take on SoCon opponent Chattanooga in Birmingham on April 3. The match is set for a 2 p.m. start in the Samford Tennis Center. A full recap and results will be posted to www.samfordsports.com following the completion of the match.
