Baseball Takes Series Opener From The Citadel, 8-4

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The Samford baseball team earned an 8-4 victory over The Citadel in the first game of a three-game Southern Conference series Friday night at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
 
With the win, Samford improves to 23-11 overall and 6-1 in Southern Conference play. The Citadel falls to 10-23 overall and 3-7 in league contests.


 
FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Ayrton Schafer went 3-for-4 with four RBI to lead Samford at the plate.
  • Brooks Carlson went 3-for-5 with two doubles and one RBI.
  • Max Pinto went 3-for-3 with a run scored for the Bulldogs.
  • Carson Cupo (3-0) pitched 2.2 innings in relief, giving up one run on one hit to earn the win on the mound for Samford.
  • Ben Peden went 3-for-5 to lead The Citadel at the plate.
  • Bryce Leasure went 2-for-5 with two RBI.
  • Ryan McCarthy homered in a 1-for-4 performance.
  • Dylan Spence (0-3) pitched one third of an inning, giving up three runs on three hits to take the loss for The Citadel.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • Samford jumped on top first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Schafer hit a two-run single to give Samford a 2-0 advantage.
  • The Citadel scored a run in the third inning and two more runs in the fifth inning to take a 3-2 lead.
  • Samford plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 4-3 lead. Schafer and Taylor Garris drove in a run each as Samford re-took the lead.
  • After The Citadel tied the score again with a run in the top of the seventh inning, Samford plated three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 7-4 lead. Schafer and Jordan Fucci had an RBI each in the inning, and Sonny DiChiara scored on a wild pitch as Samford took a three-run advantage.
  • Samford added one final run in the bottom of the eighth inning to make the final score 8-4. Carlson singled up the middle to drive in Pinto for the game's final run.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
Samford and The Citadel will continue their three-game series with a game Saturday. The contest is set to begin at 1 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
