MACON, Ga. – The Samford men's tennis team wrapped up its regular season with a 4-3 win at Mercer Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Samford improves to 11-9 overall and 3-4 in Southern Conference matches. Mercer falls to 10-14 overall and 3-3 in league play.
"Today was a great match overall," Samford head coach
Rahim Esmail said. "It was exactly what college tennis is about. Great sportsmanship and great competitiveness from both teams. We competed extremely hard today across the board. It was a marathon of a match and we are fortunate to come out on top. It's always a battle when we play Mercer, as they compete extremely hard as well. Daniel did a great job clinching today - everyone had a big impact in today's match. We are looking forward to conference next week."
Samford won the doubles matches at No. 2 and No. 3 to secure the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead.
In singles, Samford earned wins at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 to secure the 4-3 victory. With the score tied at 3-3,
Daniel Orlita's 7-6, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles clinched the Samford victory.
Samford has earned the No. 5 seed in next week's Southern Conference Tournament in Macon, Ga. The Bulldogs will open the event by taking on the No. 4 seed Wofford Thursday at 12 p.m. (CT).
