Baseball Wins Ninth-Straight, 4-3, Over Troy

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The Samford baseball team won its ninth-straight game in a 4-3 victory over in-state rival Troy Wednesday night at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
 
With the win, Samford improves to 31-11 on the season. Troy falls to 21-20 with the loss.


 
FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Branden Fryman and Sonny DiChiara had one hit and one RBI each to lead Samford in the win.
  • Taylor Garris and Max Pinto also had an RBI each for the Bulldogs.
  • Gene Hurst (3-2) pitched 4.0 innings, giving up two runs on six hits to earn the win on the mound for Samford.
  • Jack Rude pitched the final inning to pick up his first save of the season.
  • For Troy, Chase Smartt went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
  • Taylor Pridgen (0-1) took the loss for the Trojans, tossing 1.1 innings, allowing three runs on one hit.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • Troy took an early 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the second inning.
  • Samford came back to take a 3-1 lead with three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Garris and Pinto both walked with the bases loaded, and then Ayrton Schafer scored when Fryman reached base on a fielder's choice.
  • Troy cut the lead to 3-2 with a run in the top of the fourth inning.
  • Samford plated a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to push its lead to 4-2. DiChiara singled to drive in Fryman for a two-run Samford lead.
  • Troy added one final run in the top of the seventh inning to make the final score 4-3.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
Samford will travel to Spartanburg, S.C., for a three-game Southern Conference series at Wofford this weekend. The teams are scheduled to play Friday at 5 p.m. (CT), Saturday at 2 p.m. (CT) and Sunday at 12 p.m. (CT).
