JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Samford baseball team opened its final regular season series at ETSU with a 5-1 win Thursday evening at Thomas Stadium.
With the win, Samford improves to 38-16 overall and 18-4 in league games. ETSU falls to 31-18 overall and 10-11 in league games.
FROM THE BOX SCORE
- Sonny DiChiara went 2-for-5 with a double, a home run and one RBI to lead Samford at the plate.
- Ayrton Schafer went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
- Gene Hurst (4-2) pitched 4.0 innings in relief, giving up one run on one hit and striking out seven batters to earn the win on the mound for Samford.
- Jack Rude picked up his second save of the season, pitching the final 3.0 innings without allowing a hit.
- For ETSU, Jackson Greer hit a solo home run, going 1-for-4 at the plate.
- Micah Kaczor (6-2) pitched 5.0 innings, giving up two runs on five hits to take the loss for the Bucs.
SCORING SUMMARY
- Samford got off to a fast start, plating two runs in the top of the first inning. Jordan Fucci doubled down the right-field line to drive in Brooks Carlson for the first run. Schafer later singled up the middle to drive in Fucci for a 2-0 Samford lead.
- ETSU cut the Samford lead to 2-1 when Greer hit a solo home run to left field in the bottom of the sixth inning.
- Samford added a run in the top of the seventh inning when Ryan Crockett scored when Branden Fryman reached base on an ETSU error to make the score 3-1.
- In the top of the eighth inning, DiChiara homered to center field to push Samford's lead to 4-1.
- In the top of the ninth inning, Preston Moore doubled to left field and advanced to third on an error, and Fryman scored on the error to make the score 5-1.
