Volleyball Takes Two Wins To Capture Samford Invitational Title

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The Samford volleyball team earned a pair of wins to capture the championship of the 2019 Samford Invitational Saturday at the Pete Hanna Center. In Samford's first match of the day, the Bulldogs earned a 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-19) win over Jacksonville State. Samford then took on UAB, defeating the Blazers, 3-1 (25-14, 25-23, 17-25, 25-21).
 
Samford went 3-0 in the tournament to improve to 4-2 on the season. UAB went 2-1 in the event and the Blazers are now 3-3 on the season. Samford's Grace Tiesman was named Tournament MVP, while Kelsi Hobbs and Briana Holmes were also named to the All-Tournament team. KEY MOMENTS
  • The first set was tight early with neither team able to build a significant lead until Samford took an 18-14 advantage.
  • The Bulldogs built their lead out to 22-16, and Samford won the first set, 25-22.
  • Samford jumped out to an early 10-3 lead in the second set.
  • JSU fought back to cut the lead to 10-7, but Samford was able to extend its lead back out to 21-14.
  • Samford won the second set, 25-17.
  • In the third set, JSU took an early 6-4 lead, but Samford came back to take a 16-11 advantage.
  • The Gamecocks scored the next five points to tie the score at 16-16.
  • Samford scored six of the next seven points to take a 22-17 lead, and the Bulldogs took the set, 25-19, and the match, 3-0.

  • In the first set, Samford got off to a hot start, racing out to an 8-0 lead.
  • The Bulldogs led by as many as 11 points and came away with a 25-14 set win.
  • After Samford took a 5-1 lead in the second set, UAB scored the next four points to knot the score at 5-5.
  • Samford regained the lead, taking a 10-7 advantage.
  • With the set tied at 18-18, Samford scored the next five points in a row to take a 23-18 lead, but UAB answered by scoring the next four points to cut the lead to 23-22.
  • Samford, however, scored two of the next three points to win the set, 25-23.
  • In the third set, UAB jumped out to a 16-5 lead.
  • The Blazers controlled the third set, coming away with the 25-17 win.
  • In the fourth set, Samford built an 8-3 lead, but UAB fought back to cut the lead to 8-6.
  • Samford pushed its lead back out to 13-8, but UAB again came back to cut the lead to 14-13.
  • With Samford leading, 19-18, the Bulldogs scored six of the next nine points to take the 25-21 set win and the 3-1 match victory.

  • Tiesman had 16 kills and 10 digs to lead Samford in the match.
  • Deaton tallied 15 kills and 11 digs, while Hobbs tallied 12 kills and 14 digs.

Samford (4-2) will travel to Kennesaw, Ga., to compete in the Kennesaw State Challenge next Friday and Saturday. The Bulldogs will take on Kennesaw State Friday at 6 p.m. (CT), and South Alabama Saturday at 11 a.m. (CT).
