FLASHBACK FRIDAY: Baseball Wins First NCAA Regional Game

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- This week's Flashback Friday features the Samford baseball team winning its first NCAA Regional game with a dominating 5-0 win over SEC Tournament Champion Mississippi State on June 1, 2012.

The Bulldogs earned the program's first NCAA Tournament bid with a dramatic 9-6, 10-inning win over Georgia Southern in the championship game of the Southern Conference Tournament.

Samford was sent to the NCAA Tallahassee Regional, hosted by Florida State. The Bulldogs opened the regional against 17th-ranked Mississippi State, which had just won the SEC Tournament. Tallahassee native Charles Basford pitched 8.0 shutout innings and the Samford offense hit four home runs off of SEC Pitcher of the Year Chris Stratton on the way to a 5-0 win.

After a loss to third-ranked and host Florida State, Samford earned another win over Mississippi State, this time by a 3-2 score, advancing to the championship round of the regional. A loss to FSU ended the historic season with a school-record 41 wins (41-23).

This week's Flashback Friday is sponsored by Hyatt Regency Birmingham -- The Wynfrey Hotel.
